Tabs have always frustrated me in VSCodium (my go-to text editor). You want to browse a bunch of files, but each click in the file explorer creates a new tab. Exceed five or six and you can’t even see how many you have open. And pruning is fiddly.
Today I discovered a simple solution: vertical tabs. Just open the secondary sidebar, drag the “Open Editors” element over, and you get a neat list for better overview and easier tab curation.
Btw this trick also works for other things that live in the primary sidebar by default and that you would like to have easier access to. I do this also for the R extension, to get an RStudio-style pane showing workspace objects. But vertical tabs is even more useful, at least for us tab-haters.
